San Jose is the 10th largest city by population in the USA, and the largest city in Northern California – that’s a lot of people to feed. Some of the best food in California can be found in San Jose, and we put together a list of our favorite restaurants that you absolutely must try.

9. Adelita’s Taqueria

Quality and authenticity are what Adelita’s prides itself on. Their tacos are great, but it’s the burritos that really get us excited. The BJJ Burrito comes with black beans, melted cheese, sauteed mushrooms, grilled onions, salsa fresca, avocado, and lettuce. Or, if you’re looking for something special, try Sky’s Special – it’s a Super Burrito with steak and chicken fajita, then grilled.

8. Bill’s Cafe

Bill’s Cafe has plenty of locations in the San Jose area, so no matter where you go you’re always within reach of a good breakfast. All locations are open from 7am-3pm. If it’s your first visit, be sure to try the Crab Cakes Benedict. It’s two crab cakes, two poached eggs, and a rich hollandaise sauce on an English muffin – served with  your choice of hashbrowns or fresh seasoned country potatoes. Don’t forget to get one of Bill’s Famous Bloody Marys or Mimosas with your breakfast.

7. St. John’s Bar & Grill

St. John’s Bar & Grill is our pick for the best burgers in the San Jose area. The Roasted Garlic & Bleu Cheese Burger comes with 1/3 lb. of fresh ground chuck topped with fresh sauteed garlic and bleu cheese crumbles. If spicy is what you’re looking for, try the Beg for Mercy Cheese Burger; it comes loaded with roasted serrano peppers, pepper jack cheese, and chipotle mayo. Don’t forget to come back to St. John’s to try the Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches too.

6. Rosie’s New York Pizza

Rosie’s is our favorite pizza spot in San Jose. No matter what you do, start with the Homemade Garlic Knots – fresh pizza dough tied into knots tossed with fresh garlic, parsley & olive oil, and served with homemade marinara sauce. The Strombolis and Calzones are great too, but if you’ve never been before you have to try the pizza. We recommend Rosie’s Combo, a pie that comes with sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, green peppers, onion, and olives.

5. Back A Yard

Caribbean food is delicious, and Back A Yard is doing it right. The Jamaican Jerk Chicken comes with Back A Yard’s signature (and delicious) Jerk Sauce, rice, beans, fried plantains and a tossed salad for just $9.75. If you’re looking for a BBQ flavor, try the BBQ Louisiana Hot Link or the BBQ Pork Spareribs. Close the meal off with a Sweet Potato Pudding and you’re all set.

4. Smoking Pig BBQ Company

If you’re looking for delicious meat, and a lot of it, you’ve been looking for Smoking Pig BBQ. All of the Sammys are great if you’re looking for a hand-held option, but we’d regret not telling you to try the 1/2 Rack of Ribs. Or, if beef is what you’re looking for, you can’t go wrong with the Slow Smoked Certified Angus Beef Brisket. It’s top notch.

3. Poor House Bistro

The atmosphere at Poor House Bistro is off the charts. What looks like an old house is so much more. You’ll be eating tasty New Orleans inspired cuisine like Po’ Boys, Crawfish Pasta, Sausage Bread and Cajun Popcorn (shrimp, cornmeal coated with herbs & spices, then fried). Also adding to the atmosphere is an array of great live music. Poor House Bistro isn’t just a restaurant – it’s an experience.

2. Alexander’s Steakhouse

We’ll let Alexander’s video on Vimeo do the talking. It’s a great mix of local ingredients and international delights. The perfect spot for that special night out.

1. Super Taqueria

You can travel far and wide and be hard-pressed to find a better burrito than what you’ll get at Super Taqueria. The Super Burritos are out of this world, the meat is juicy and the ingredients are as fresh as it gets. The Carne Asada is our favorite, but you really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. They’ve been doing it for decades – Super Taqueria knows there way around a kitchen.
